Teaching Systems Thinking to Industrial Engineering Students
نویسنده
چکیده
This paper describes the development of a senior and a graduate level course on Systems Engineering and Design for Industrial Engineering students. Students are first taught ‘Classical Systems Engineering’ topics, and they are then exposed to Sociotechnical System Theory (SST), Cognitive Systems Engineering (CSE) and Soft Systems Methodology (SSM). These methodologies are treated as complementary, useful in resolving a range of problems from hard to soft where all problem situations are presented on a continuum from well structured to unstructured.

The purpose of this preliminary study was to qualitatively explore the results of using low-cost educational videos, oriented at complementing face-to-face and distance courses of the Degrees in Industrial Engineering, Industrial Organization and Aeronautical Engineering at ETSEIAT (Technical School of Industrial Engineering and Aeronautical Engineering of Terrassa). Qualitative analyses showed...
متن کاملDesign Thinking and Metacognitive Reflective Scaffolds: a Graphic Design-industrial Design Transfer Case Study
Scaffolding is crucial as transfer of learning does not occur naturally and teaching-learning strategies found to be effective for experts may not be suitably adopted as is for novice learners. Furthermore, opportunities are often “found” or “made.” The quality of solutions, however, is mediated by different conceptualizations of contexts. We aim to investigate whether design thinking and metac...
متن کاملA Comparative Analysis of Preferred Learning and Teaching Styles for Engineering, Industrial, and Technology Education Students and Faculty
Learning styles are personal qualities that influence the way students interact with their learning environment, peers, and teachers (Alkhasawe, Mrayyan, Docherty, Alashram, & Yousef, 2008). According to Felder and Silverman (1988), mismatches exist between common and traditional learning styles of engineering students and traditional teaching styles of engineering professors. Felder (1996) ind...
